BB 8
‘it was something like, ‘a fur on a rock, next to a fire, in a cave.’ And I literally created a rock, the rock that I wanted…’ Rick Owens
The rock sits on the flat terrain of the Saudi Arabian dessert more like an alien object just landed there for an unknown reason. Its partially isolated from its site partially dived into the soft sand. The project investigates the relation, both physical and aesthetical, of the object to its primitive boundary, the Sphere.
Sphere as a primitive express the perfection of the object and its self-completion related to everything external. The superimposed footprint of the natural rock into the interior of a solid sphere creates the composition and the dialogue between the pre-existing forms and the new emerging one. Moreover, the fragile moment between the perfection of the primitive platonic shape and the sublime imperfection of the natural object. This dialectic between the two different natures of the BB-8 is part of its material composition. Different treatment of the same material combines together the multiple aesthetics of a single object.
The color implies the way of reading the object as a duality between interior and exterior, the sharpness and the softness, the precious and the cheap, the reflective and the rough.
‘I love the contrast of big, cheap foam models next to a wildly expensive rare crystal rock’
